Half of life is a GDR feature film about the life of the German poet Friedrich Hölderlin from 1985. It was produced by the DEFA studio for feature films, artistic working group (KAG) "Johannisthal, directed by Herrmann Zschoche. The filmed material covers ten decisive years of life of the poet, which begins with his love for the married Susette Gontard and ends with the admission of the 36-year-old to a mental hospital in Tübingen on 11 September 1806, from which he was released on 3 May 1807 as "unhealable". Thus, Hölderlin was to live for 36 more or less years with more or less mental impairments – the "half of his life" – the "half of his life" At the same time, "Half of Life" is the title of one of Hölderlin's most famous poems. Filmed after Christa Kożik's film scenario, it premiered on 18 April 1985 in Berlin's International Cinema. On 16 July 1987, it was shown for the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany under the title Halb des Lebens – Hölderlin.
