The film was banned in 1973, under the chairmanship of Georges Pompidou, due to its political allusions and soft sex scenes, until the arrival of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in 1974. After suffering some light cuts, The Bonzesse was released on the screens on May 24, 1974 and did not meet the public's expectations as other erotic films like Emmanuelle were released a month later.
