La fanciulla del West, da. The Girl from the West, opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini; Guelfo Civinini (1873-1954) and Carlo Zangarini (1874-1943) have written the libretto after the play The Girl of the Golden West (1905) by David Belasco (1853-1931). The opera was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1910 with Arturo Toscanini as conductor and became a huge audience success. La fanciulla del West was less well received in Europe, and it was not until the late 1900s that it gained its well-deserved place in the European opera repertoire.
