With this film, funded by the school, by WFD and supervised by Kazimierz Karabasz, Kieslowski gets his diploma and officially enters the working world of cinema. The film is all set in Lodz and is a beautiful panorama of this mysterious and fascinating city that the director has lived intensely in the years of his studies. Kieslowski tells us of a city with cruel and unusual characteristics, a falling and picturesque city, the buildings of fate and the strange or mutilated inhabitants. The same director tells of macabre games that he used to do with his classmates: in the course that they performed every morning to go to school they often met in mutilated people, each one of which corresponded to a certain score calculated on the basis of the type of mutilation. Whoever ever got the highest score was the winner of the movie, and the people knew it was definitely necessary to keep the scene of the past. It is an affectionate and light look, attentive to the children playing the corners of the streets, to the men at the windows or at the doors of the palaces, passing through factories of workers in protest or party for a colleague. The music of Edward Ciuszka's mandolin orchestra counters the images of the gray and evil streets and houses of the city. Meanwhile a pop group sounds for spectators perhaps too old. In conclusion brave men and children, for a złoty, test their resistance with an apparatus that releases electric discharges while in the park you hold a musical contest for young people as questionable talents. These words of the song by Janusz Szodunski who close the film:. this city is not marked on the map, but after all, there is a city where the cold autumn rain does not fall from the sky.
