Wiki.

Je Vous Aime (in free translation into Portuguese: I Love You) is a French silent short film directed by Georges Demenÿ in 1891. It features an average close-up of a man (in this case, the director himself) saying "Je vous aime". It was filmed in Bois de Boulogne, Paris. It is considered the first film work to be used by the close-up or, more precisely, a medium plane of the face and chest of Demenÿ. The film was made at the request of Hector Marichelle, professor and director of the National Institute of Deaf-Mudos in Paris, in order to use the speech filmed to teach deaf students to read lips. The project was given to Demenÿ by Étienne-Jules Marey, to whom the scientific research of the film movement is among the most significant contributions to the invention of cinema. Despite this educational and scientific beginning, however, this project led Demenÿ to pursue and influence the commercial side of cinema. It can be seen freely through the Internet since, for the year of production, it is in Public Domain.
