East and West is an American theatre film directed by George Melford during the period of film censorship. The screenplay is an adaptation of the successful work East is West, written by playwright Samuel Shipman. In fact, the play was abandoned on Broadway from December 1918 to August 1920, with actor Fay Bainter in Ming Toy's main character. Launched on November 30, 1930 and produced by Universal, this film is a remake, in Spanish version, of the silent eponymous film, made in 1922 by Sidney Franklin. The main role is here, played by actress Lupe Vélez, a film, also remake, but in the English version, entitled East Is West will also be made in the studios of Universal, by Monta Bell simultaneously with him, certainly with another distribution, but always with Lupe Velez in the main role.
