Tivii, an Inuit hunter with Tuberculosis, and his family left their home in the northern part of the country to go to a sanatorium in Quebec City. He was far away from his family, unable to speak French, and faced with a completely alien world. Tivii's illness is not the most serious threat to his well-being when he refuses to eat and expresses a wish to die. She arranged for a young orphan, Kaki, to be transferred to the institution. The boy has experience with both worlds and speaks both languages. Tivii rediscovers his pride and energy by sharing his culture with Kaki. Through a plan to adopt Kaki, he rediscovers hope and makes him part of his family.
