Plot.
In March 1845, the Lucerne poor doctor and obstetrician Dr. Jacob Robert Steiger participated in the unsuccessful free troop train against the Jesuit rule in his hometown of Lucerne. After the defeat, Steiger fell into the hands of his mortal enemies and was. Sentenced to death in May. In June he was freed - so to speak from the gallows - from the Lucerne boiler tower and brought to Zurich under the cheers of the liberal Confederation, where 50,000 people welcomed him to the wine square. Among them was also comrade-in-arms Gottfried Keller, who had written a poem for the occasion and, standing on a chair, recited: "Well equipped with your letters of nobility, the death sentence with the bad tear, let us see you rise again cold from your grave today darkness. Unfortunate baptism of fire on your head, the last chain ring still in your hand, so you are walking through this young country, believed so young and yet so bent over. "
