1916: Emidio Orlich, a young officer of the Austro-Hungarian army of Dalmatian origin, after a dramatic crisis of conscience decides to desert and pass through the Italian ranks. He will end up in trial. 1941: Franco Velich, a fascist officer also born in Dalmatia, spends a period of convalescence on the island where he was born, during which he becomes aware of the violence inflicted by the Axis troops on the occupied populations.
