After the death of his father, the ambitious servant Hauke Haien works up to the successor of the old dikegrave, whose daughter Elke he marries. He develops plans for the construction of a new dike, which is better protected from storm floods, however, encounters the resistance and inertia of the villagers, who suspect him superstitiously of a devil's covenant. When a heavy storm breaks up, he chases the floods with his mold.
