Robert Sarkies grew up in the South Island city of Dunedin. He was a student at Kaikorai Valley College. His first two feature films were set in the lower South Island. Out of the Blue, based on the 1990 Aramoana Massacre, was followed in 2006 by Two Little Boys, a black comedy starring Australia's Hamish Blake.
