Plot.
The Countess Castiglione on a diplomatic mission to Paris on behalf of her cousin, the Count of Cavour, finds her old flame. The Countess is thus obliged to choose between fidelity to the commitment made and the temptation to reconnect the old relationship. In the end, she wins the Reason of State.

The film portrays the life of the nineteenth-century Italian aristocrat Virginia Oldoini, Countess of Castiglione, best known as the lover of Napoleon III of France.
