Biography
Hajo Gies (born 16 March 1945 in Lüdenscheid) is a German film and television director. From 1965 to 1968 Hajo Gies studied sociology in Frankfurt am Main with Theodor W. Adorno. From 1968 he studied together with Wim Wenders at the newly founded Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München. From the mid-1970s he made a name for himself as a director of television films, especially the ARD-Tatort. Together with Bernd Schwimm, Gies created the cult figure Horst Schimanski. From 1981 on, he staged Götz George in this role in a total of fifteen crime scenes and films of the Schimanski series. Due to the great popularity, two of these films, Zahn um Zahn and Zabou, started in the cinema and were only broadcast on television later. For the crime scene episode Moltke, Gies was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize with Gold in 1989. In 1992, together with George, he received the Bavarian Television Award for The Fall of Schimanski. Gies staged not only crime thrillers but also comedic fabrics, such as Alpine glows, love offset mountains – Alpine glows II or a sack of money.Hajo Gies' father was Heinz Gies, a media pedagogue and university professor who died in 2008. His younger brother Martin Gies is a screenwriter and also a director. He worked with him at the crime scene The Girl from across the street. In 2005 Gies married his long-standing life partner, the actress Brigitte Janner The couple lives in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst.
