Herbert Steinmetz

Herbert Steinmetz (born 19 October 1908 in Elstertrebnitz, Germany – 30 November 1986 in Bremen) was a German actor. After visiting the Leipzig Municipal Acting Schools, Steinmetz worked for a long time as a stage actor. Theater stations included Gera, Essen, Wuppertal, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Posen, Hamburg (Thalia-Theater), Bremen, Stuttgart, Hannover, Basel and the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen. He also played various roles under the direction of Rainer Werner Fassbinder: in his television adaptation by Alfred Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz as well as in the cinema productions Fontane Effi Briest (after Theodor Fontane), Lili Marleen, Lola and Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss. In 1979 he played alongside Arno Assmann, Edda Seippel, Ilsemarie Schnering and Ulrike B the role of Otto Riepe in the television multi-parter Jauche and Levkojen (director: Günter Gräwert) after the novels by Christine Brückner. In several films of the crime scene series, in which Tatort cinema film Zahn um Zahn, in Eckhard Henscheid's family satire Die Knapp-Familie and in Herbert Reinecker's television crime multi-parter Babeck he also played guest appearances in numerous television series, such as Der Kommissioner, Detektivbüro Roth and Stadtrevier. Part of the television series Die Buddenbrooks (11-parts) from 1979. From 1974 to 1979 he played the leading role as criminal councillor Roth in the SFB crime series Kommissariat IX and as janitor Kühn had a recurring role in Rainer Erler's science fiction series Das Blaue Palais. He became known to a broad audience for his role as Joschi Bennarsch in the ARD series Lindenstraße, which he impersonated from the beginning of the series. Only a few days after his serial death, Steinmetz died of heart failure during the shooting of the TV tripartite Jokehnen at the age of 78. He is buried at the Riensberg cemetery in Bremen. Steinmetz' younger brother Werner Kamenik ("Steinmetz) ("Kameník") was also active as an actor.
