
Biography
Wilhelm Franz Josef Mattes (born 4 January 1916 in Vienna, died 30 July 2002 in Salzburg) is an Austrian composer and conductor, known for his schlager songs and compositions of film music. After his maturity in 1935 and a diploma as conductor in 1937, he became master of chapel in Oldenburg and Leipzig. He also worked for the production companies UFA and Tobis Film.From 1944 to 1951, Mattes was conductor of orchestra for the Sveriges Radio in Stockholm and then the Bayerischer Rundfunk and from 1964 to 1974 the Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Stuttgart. In 1947, he composed a concert piece for piano and orchestra Swedish Rapsody which can be heard in the American film Madame X. From 1975 to 1980, he directed the light music collection of the RIAS In 1981, he was conductor for the Norddeutscher Rundfunk.Willy Mattes made a first marriage with actress and dancer Margit Symo and then a second with former Miss Germany and Miss Europe Christel Schaack. He was the father of actress Eva Mattes.
