Pierre Ayraud, known as Thomas Narcejac, born in Rochefort-sur-Mer on 3 July 1908 and died in Nice on 7 June 1998, is a French writer, author of police novels. He was raised in Saintes, and often goes fishing during his youth, at the place called "Narcejac", which he will remember to choose his pseudonym. He studies university in Bordeaux, Poitiers and Paris, which allow him to obtain licenses in letters and philosophy. He then goes to teaching and successively takes up positions in Vannes, Troyes, Aurillac. From 1945, he is professor of classical letters in Nantes until his retirement in 1968.From the post-war period, he makes news that are so many pastiches of authors of police literature. These texts will be gathered in Confidences in my night (1946), New Confidences in My Night (1947) and False and Use of False (1952) Narcejac also published his first police novels, including L'Assassin of midnight (1945). Feu que ça sanigne (1948) is his first novel written in collaboration with Serge Arcouët who then used the pseudonym Terry Stewart. The two authors then gave a series of action novels, the series of Slims under the common pseudonym of John-Silver Lee. With Death is of the journey (1948), written alone, he won the prize of the adventure novel. During a dinner, Albert Pigasse, the director of the Champs-Élysées Bookstore, promotes the encounter between Narcejac and Pierre Boileau. It is the beginning of the literary association of these two authors who will sign forty years of police novels under the signature Boileau-Narcejac Some police novels of this duo have given rise to cinematographic adaptations by Henri-Georges Clouzot and Alfred Hitchcock. On the margins of this collaboration, Narcejac wrote only a few maritime novels: One flesh (1954) and Le Grand Métier (1955) Literary theorist, Narcejac also published, alone or in collaboration with Pierre Boileau, several notable essays devoted to the police novel.Thomas Narcejac has two daughters: Annette and Jacqueline.
