Gunter Friedrich (born 1 August 1938 in Zwickau) is a German film director. Friedrich was born in 1938 as the son of a student councillor in Zwickau. He graduated from high school and began studying at the Engineering School for Film Technology Potsdam-Babelsberg in 1956, where he was trained until 1959 in the subject "Recording Director". He then began to work as assistant director at Deutsche Fernsehfunk and from 1962 to 1965 completed an acting training in the young talent studio of the DFF. From 1965 he worked for five years as an actor as well as a director at various theatres in the GDR. He only switched to the DFF in 1970. Until 1984 he first shot various children's films for television, including 1974 Why can't I be good?, 1976 When someone promised what and 1979 "I – then for a while nothing". His DEFA children's films became known as Geigenkasten (1985), Hasenherz (1987) and Die Sprungdeckeluhr (1991), which remained his only cinema films.
