In 1970, at a shimmering year-long festival of the aristocracy, the young Zaira copier is mysteriously murdered. Thirteen years pass and the main defendant, the humble waiter Gastão, who was the victim's colleague, tries to prove his innocence, aided by his son, Nil, engaging in the life of all those who were also at the party. He also tells the story of a fiery double jeweller, the sophisticated Antônia Regina and João Maria, this criminal lawyer member of the decadent aristocracy, who embraces the cause of Nil's father. At the end of the plot, Jurandir, the girl's killer, kills himself, and Zé Brandão, one of his friends who were at the celebration, reveals: he, Zé, was Zaira's father.
