In the 18th century, the Preussenmajor von Tellheim and his regiment arrive in Saxony, where he spends the winter in Bruchsall Castle. Minna von Barnhelm, the niece of Count Bruchsall, leads the castle. But the villagers are not good at speaking to the Prussians and demand of Minna a contribution that is so high that Minna can't possibly raise it. Tellheim proposes the money, which he will regret later on.
