When her friends' rowdy and unsociable behavior escalates while on holiday in the Balkans, she resolves to seek out some tranquility and travel home alone. When she faints on the platform at the railway station, her expectations of peace are short-lived. She was rushed onto the train with a pounding head and a feeling of being in a dream. When she falls asleep, she is comforted by an older English lady called Miss Froy, but when she wakes up, her fellow passengers deny she ever existed.
