Plot.
1943. When Luke learns that Meggie has a son, he returns to the farm. At this point he does not yet suspect that the young Dane is from an affair with Meggie with Erzcardinal Ralph. Meggie seems inclined to try it again with Luke. Ralph is sent back from the Vatican to Australia, and when he meets Meggie, the fateful passion between the two sparks a second time. The situation escalates when Luke wins the guardianship over Dane.

The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years is a 1996 CBS miniseries directed by Kevin James Dobson. Adapted from the 1977 novel The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, it tells the story of the nineteen years between Dane's birth and Ralph's return to Australia. These years are unaccounted for in both the original 1983 ABC miniseries and the novel.
