"A Raisin in the Sun" opened on Broadway in 1959 and changed the face of American theater forever. She did not shy away from richly drawn characters and unprecedented subject matter as the first black woman to author a play on Broadway. The play won the top prize from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. The timely story of Hansberry's life is less known because the play is seen as a landmark work of art.
