Tracy López is a young nurse who lives in Los Angeles with her fiancé, Sam Ross. Her relationship enjoys relative tranquillity, until Tracy, by accident, is a witness to a murder committed by her fiancé. Scared, she warns the Police Department of what she saw. She later discovers that Sam lied to her all the time, since in reality she has criminal connections with the mafia. The police introduce Tracy into the Witness Protection Program, where they give her a new identity: from now on her name will be Mariela Foret Following the indications given to her, she flees the country to Mexico City. There she works in a prestigious hospital belonging to the respected cardiologist Francisco Riquer, who as a person is hard and full of regrets, because he cannot save his wife and son from death, who died in the Mexican earthquake in 1985. But as a doctor she is noble and compassionate. Francisco and Tracy met each other and despite the initial encounters that they both had, they will end up falling in love, but Sam, furious that he was betrayed by his fiancée, will travel to Mexico willing not to let her be happy with the doctor.
