Plot.
Germany 1939. Hans and Lene marry the day before the war breaks out, and Hans is sent to the Eastern front. During a bombing raid their daughter Anna is born. The house is destroyed and Lene and Anna moves in with relatives in Berlin. Hans survives the war but he is not the same person as in 1939, and he and Lene find it difficult to live together again.

Germany, Pale Mother (German: Deutschland bleiche Mutter) is a 1980 West German drama film written and directed by Helma Sanders-Brahms. It premiered at the 30th Berlin International Film Festival in 1980, where it was nominated for a Golden Bear award. The title is taken from the poem of the same name by Bertolt Brecht.
It was not released in the United States until 1984. The film was restored and re-released on DVD and Blu-ray in the United Kingdom in 2015 by the British Film Institute.
