Biography

Academy Award-nominated Visual Effects Supervisor Martin Hill has supervised over a dozen films.


Drawing on his artistic and technical background, he focuses on story and creates compelling previs, creatures, environments, FX, motion graphics, and digital characters. Martin recently led Wētā FX’s work on Marvel’s new Moon Knight (2022) series.


Martin supervised Wētā FX’s iconic work across all episodes of Season 8 of Game of Thrones (2019), winning a Primetime Emmy. He was also the overall supervisor on The Christmas Chronicles 2, spanning pre-production, previs, shooting, and delivery of all the visual effects for this Netflix film.


He oversaw more than 1300 mostly fully digital shots on Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), and his work on Prometheus (2012) was recognised with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Visual Effects. On Furious 7 (2015), he pushed the boundaries of photoreal digital humans with over 300 shots of digital Paul Walker.


As Shaders Supervisor and Head of Department, Martin oversaw the look development of digital assets on several films, including James Cameron’s Avatar (2009). In 2014, he received an Academy® Technical Achievement Award for his co-development of the global illumination lighting/spherical harmonics system.


At Double Negative, Martin worked on a wide range of projects in different roles, from matte painting to programming software for motion control cameras, as well as on set for motion control, miniature, and element shoots.
