Wiki.

Cold Turkey is a 1971 satirical black comedy film starring Dick Van Dyke and a long list of comedic actors. The film was directed, coproduced and cowritten by Norman Lear and is based on the unpublished novel I'm Giving Them Up for Good by Margaret and Neil Rau.

In the film, a tobacco company offers tax-free money to any American populated place whose entire population can go cold turkey for a month. The offer is a publicity stunt, and the company does not expect anyone to take on the challenge. But an impoverished town in Iowa takes on the challenge, in hopes or reversing its rapid population decline. Its citizens start struggling with their shared addiction.

The film was produced in 1969 but was shelved for two years by the distributor over concerns about its box-office potential.
