He is an English novelist and screenwriter. His first novel, Our Mother's House, was made into a film and starred Dirk Bogarde. He was brought up in London. He settled in France after moving to the United States. He is still popular in France, where he has lived for most of his life, and most of his work is available in translation from Gallimard.
